Did you know that there are more than 340 dog breeds officially recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI)?
The Fédération Cynologique Internationale recognizes 343 breeds and varieties of dogs originating from all around the world.
Before acquiring a dog, it is important to thoroughly study the history, temperament, energy levels, and physical characteristics of your favorite breeds. Understanding different breeds helps prepare you to provide your dog with a better quality of life and a more suitable environment for its specific needs.
Purebred Dog Breeds
Dog breeds are divided into 10 representative groups, which are further organized according to specific breed characteristics, country of origin, or the type of work the dogs were originally developed to perform.
Each breed is considered the “property” of a specific country. The countries responsible for each breed establish the breed standard — a detailed description of the ideal characteristics of the breed — in collaboration with the FCI Standards and Scientific Commissions. The FCI is responsible for translating, updating, and publishing these standards.
These breed standards serve as the official reference used by judges during dog shows held in FCI member countries and by breeders striving to produce dogs of superior quality and correct breed type.
