The Federación Canófila de Puerto Rico (FCPR) was officially recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) on June 15, 1979, in Bern, Switzerland, marking the beginning of Puerto Rico’s formal integration into the international canine community.
Since its inception, the FCPR has played a pivotal role in the development of purebred dog breeding, education, and competition on the island. Puerto Rico holds a unique position in the canine world as one of the few places where both FCI and American Kennel Club (AKC) systems coexist, offering exhibitors expanded opportunities for international recognition.
Over the years, the FCPR has hosted major events, including the prestigious World Dog Show in 1997, as well as multiple FCI Section Shows, strengthening its presence on the global stage. The organization has also contributed to the advancement of canine education through initiatives such as its educational programs for judges, breeders, and handlers.
Today, the FCPR continues to evolve, embracing modernization while honoring its legacy, and remains committed to promoting excellence in the canine sport both locally and internationally.
